Cardiovascular Assessment

“Almost one in two men and women die from heart attacks or strokes. One man in four will have a heart attack before retirement age and a quarter of all deaths from heart attack occur in people under the age of 65. For women, heart disease and strokes are second only to cancer as the leading cause of death between the ages of 35 and 54.” (The H Factor; Patrick Holford & Dr James Braly; p77).

These statistics may seem rather gloomy but cardiovascular disease in the majority of cases is preventable, and if caught early on, can even be reversed by making a few, simple lifestyle changes.

This assessment uses a new ground-breaking device called a
CardioCheck unit. Developed in the UK and tested in St. Thomas’ Hospital, London, the CardioCheck unit is proving to be invaluable in detecting the stiffness of arteries which is an early sign of cardiovascular disease, even before high blood pressure develops. Once detected, a simple lifestyle programme can be undertaken to prevent further deterioration.

The assessment takes approximately half an hour and includes:

·

Pulse Wave Velocity reading using the CardioCheck

·

Blood pressure check

·

Pulse check for rate, rhythm and strength

·

Waist measurement

·

Lifestyle advice

You may also be advised to have certain blood tests, depending on the result from your assessment.

The health assessment is totally confidential and will not be shared without your consent.  However, should the examination or subsequent test results show anything which is abnormal, the nurse will recommend that you take a letter to your GP for further investigation.

Group Cardiovascular Assessments

Due to popular demand, we can also arrange to visit your home or another venue to do cardiovascular assessments on family, friends, neighbours, group members, or colleagues. A minimum of 4 people is required. Each assessment takes approximately 20 minutes and includes a CardioCheck reading, blood pressure measurement and lifestyle advice. We also include a short presentation about cardiovascular health to your group at no extra charge.

To arrange this, there needs to be a person allocated as a co-ordinator who would book time slots for each person up to a maximum of 10 people.

A quiet area or separate room at the venue would be preferable to provide privacy during each consultation.

Pre-Exercise Programme Screen

A regular exercise programme is recommended by all health professionals because it will help to protect your cardiovascular system. Exercise has also been found to protect against diabetes and cancer . However, if you are over 30 and are planning to commence an exercise programme, it is important to have a health assessment beforehand. Your local gym or fitness centre may do some basic checks but most will be woefully inadequate. It is not unusual to hear about people having a sudden heart attack in the gym, whilst out jogging or on the golf course without having any prior symptoms. In most cases this is due to a narrowing of the arteries from a build-up of fatty deposits laid down over several years. Symptoms may not be noticeable until a heart attack occurs.

Therefore, our
Pre-Exercise Programme Screen would be a useful way of testing your health before commencing any form of new exercise. By including the CardioCheck test, any arterial stiffness that may be present from narrowed arteries should be discovered, thereby giving you an early warning to build up your exercise more slowly. This test could potentially save your life.

The assessment takes approximately half an hour and includes:

·

Pre-Exercise Programme questionnaire

·

Blood pressure check

·

Pulse check for rate, rhythm and strength

·

Waist measurement

·

Pulse Wave Velocity reading using the CardioCheck

Insurance Medical Advice

If you are considering taking out Life Insurance, Income Protection Insurance or a new mortgage and you are over 35, there is a strong possibility that you will be required to have a medical before your policy is accepted. This is usually carried out by a nurse or a doctor and for some people, this can be quite a worry.

The nurse at
Pulse Health Screening has years of experience in carrying out insurance medicals and frequently comes across people who are afraid of what the medical may entail and the kind of information that they would be asked to give. Quite often, clients forget about certain elements of their past medical history and if they are not declared at the time of the medical, the insurance company may refuse to pay out if a claim is made.

This has identified a need for insurance medical advice which gives the client the opportunity to be prepared when a medical is requested.

This advisory service includes a mock insurance medical, using the standard questions that are asked by most of the “big name” insurance companies eg Legal & General, Norwich Union, HSBC Life, Bright Grey, Liverpool Victoria Life, Standard Life, Scottish Widows and many more.

If any health problems are identified such as a raised blood pressure reading or a high body mass index score, then appropriate lifestyle advice can be given to address the potential problem. If the advice is acted upon, this may help to reduce your premiums.

After your appointment, you will receive a printed summary of the mock medical which you will be able to use as a reminder when you have your official medical.
