It is estimated that approximately one person in every four will have an allergy during their lifetime. The most common allergens are inhalants such as pollen, moulds and pet dander. Other common allergens are chemicals in toiletries and household products, bee or wasp stings and foods such as eggs and nuts. However, less than 2% of the population have a true food allergy, which is often confused with food intolerance. - see Food Intolerance Tests. Pulse Health Screening offers a variety of allergy tests, some of which may be performed in your own home. They check for the presence of Immunoglobulin E (IgE) in your blood, which confirms an allergy. Please Note: You should not change your diet prior to the test.
An allergen is a substance which comes in contact with your body and causes a reaction such as sneezing, itchy skin, or wheezing. In severe cases it may cause breathing difficulties or an anaphylactic shock where your body shuts down. The body’s immune system looks upon the allergen as an invader in a similar way to how it reacts to bacteria and viruses. The body produces antibodies to attack the allergen which causes the release of a substance called histamine. It is histamine which leads to the allergic symptoms.
