If you have been trying for a baby without success or you are hoping to become pregnant in your 30s or 40s, there are tests which can check your reproductive hormone levels.

Other tests are also listed here that should be considered when planning a baby at any age.  These can check the general health of both parents. Correcting any abnormalities before trying to conceive may improve your chance of having a healthy pregnancy and birth which should also result in a healthy baby, too.

Anti-Mullerian Hormone Test

Venous blood sample taken on any day in your cycle which can help estimate the reserve of eggs in the ovaries of older women in their 30s or 40s.  This test will not be accurate if you have Polycystic Ovary Syndrome. Also, the AMH test cannot be done if you are on the Pill. You will need to allow at least one cycle after stopping the Pill before taking a test.  Also available as a finger-prick test

Most of these tests are analysed at The Doctors Laboratory, London, unless stated otherwise.  You will be sent a blood testing kit in the post.  You need to ask for your blood sample to be taken at your GP surgery or by a local phlebotomist, which may incur an additional fee.  If you can get to The Doctor’s Laboratory at 76 Wimpole Street, London, they can take your blood, there.  Opening hours are Monday to Friday: 07.00am  to 7.00pm, Saturday: 09.00 to 5.00pm.  If you wish to use this service, you will be required to pay an additional fee which can be ordered below.

Some of the blood tests from The Doctors Laboratory are now available from finger-prick samples. More details here.

Finger Prick Blood Tests

These test kits require a finger-prick blood sample, When you have taken your sample, you should send it to the laboratory in the pre-paid envelope as soon as possible.  You will receive a print-out of the result within three weeks.

Please Note: Samples should not be taken or posted on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays.

Hair analysis gives a helpful guide to essential mineral status and to heavy metal toxicity in your body. This will tell if you have enough of the nutrients your baby will need whilst developing in the womb and also if you have too many toxins that could be harmful.

Vitamin D - 25 Hydroxy

Vitamin D Finger Prick Test

Saliva Tests

These test kits require a saliva sample unless stated otherwise.  They are all analysed by Genova Diagnostics.  When you have taken your sample(s), you should send it to the laboratory in the supplied envelope as soon as possible from your local post office.  You will receive your results by email, usually within three weeks.  Samples should not be taken or posted on Fridays, Saturdays or Sundays.
